Kick A
If Kevin Smith made a teen comedy, you might get something like Kick &ss.
The story is about a nerd named David who wonders why no-one has ever actually tried to be a superhero and fight crime. Fed up with the muggers in his neighbourhood, he buys himself a really rubbish outfit and challenges them. His adventures are caught on a mobile phone and put on YouTube. The next thing you know, he's a sensation - albeit a really ineffective one who struggles even to rescue cats ("Have you seen Mr. Bitey?") But rumours persist of other caped crusaders in the city... and they've taken notice of Kick &ss. One of them is a particularly foul-mouthed and sarcastic little girl -
KICK &SS: How can I contact you?
HIT GIRL: Just call the mayor, he's got a signal that he uses to light up the sky. It's in the shape of a giant c***.
This film is a hoot. It's one of the most violent films I've seen in a while, but also hysterically funny. It's like an Itchy & Scratchy cartoon come to life, as people are hacked, stabbed, gouged and shot. One massacre takes place to the Banana Splits theme. Actually the soundtrack is great all the way through from the theme to A Fistful of Dollars playing as Hit Girl approaches the bad guys, through to the big finale which is fanfared by Elvis's American Trilogy.
Kick &ss is sort of hard to describe. A teen fantasy violent romantic action comedy. It's what would happen if Kill Bill bred with Superbad. It also features a terrific performance from Nicholas Cage, doing a great Adam West impression. I had no idea what to expect from this film, but it was treat from start to finish. And yet another successful trip with the Movie Club to CineWorld to see a film I might otherwise have missed.
