For the family

A special day of memories

We decided to spend this day reminiscing and making new memories in a city that special significance to me.

We are in Worcester where I started my nursing career in 1963 and spent the first 8 years of my total 50yrs in the NHS.

The blip shows the former Worcester Royal Infirmary, the red brick building on the left side of the shot, and the lighter modern buildings which were built after the University of Worcester took over the occupancy of the site. The old hospital had extensions which have now gone which accommodated the children’s wards, operating theatres,  path labs and other areas.

I spent time on the children’s wards as a student nurse and as a staff nurse, so can see out of the now non existent windows to the scenes outside.

We parked in the Cattle market car park and walked along to the Swan Theatre and to to see the house that I shared with two other nurses when I was a ward sister at the WRI. B remembers this house from before we were married. He came to a party along with the sausage rolls that my mum made, a first date in a sense…..that’s another story.

We then went back to see the front of the old hospital. We had planned to see the University Medical museum, but it’s now closed on a Saturday due to shortage of staff. I spoke to the curator on Thursday morning and was made aware of the situation. We must try to make arrangements to visit during the week, as she has offered to let us see the areas that are significant to me, that are not normally open to the public.

We looked around the outside of the building before walking along Infirmary Walk and chatting to an elderly gentleman outside the Almshouses.

We then wandered round the city looking at changes that have occurred since 1971 when I left to get married.

A quick M&S  shopping fix, we don’t have one in Uttoxeter, which was most successful. Then a visit to see the Cathedral, the remains of Worcester Porcelain business, down to the river Severn and back to the car park along the river bank. All of this took about 4-5 hours, as we took in all the changes along the way.

As we walked along the road towards the railway bridge a train passed over. I suddenly remembered watching the trains with the children on the medical ward. No TV or phones in those days so entertainment included a bit of train spotting from the balcony window with your special nurse.

A magic day, it will be interesting to see what I dream about tonight.

After the dreadful weather yesterday, it was beautiful today.
