E Day

The day started not too badly. Bertie and I had a breezy walk with only a couple of stronger gusts which pushed us along a bit more quickly. By the afternoon things were a bit different and the wind was definitely a lot stronger, storm Éowyn had arrived. The wind  had also veered to the north-west, not a good direction for us. I was watching the old birch trees in the garden, swaying back and forth in the wind, wondering if they would survive (they did), when the electricity went off! So we put another log on the wood burner and lit a few candles, and Nick mixed a cocktail.
Some time later, a decision had to be made; the power was still off and we were getting hungry. Soup (heated on the gas ring which we keep for such emergencies) and sandwiches sated our hunger and we hunkered down for the evening. Since we moved here fourteen years ago, power cuts haven’t  lasted more than a couple of hours, but by 10.00pm we decided to go to bed in the dark, armed with torches.
