In celebration of Sidney Poitier
To the British Film Institute on London's Southbank this evening for a screening of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, starring Sidney Poitier, Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn. A brilliant film that inexplicably I didn't see when it was first released in 1967. Although interracial marriage/relationships are unremarkable these days the film still resonates to today's world where tolerance, understanding and acceptance of difference can still be found wanting. The film was being shown as part of a season in celebration of Sidney Poitier and was followed by a conversation between the British actors Ariyon Bakare, (pictured), who played opposite Lenny James in the recent BBC dramatisation of Mr Loverman, and Michael Balogun who was in series 2 of Sherwood, another excellent BBC drama. They were both reflecting, as black actors of different generations, on the influence of Sidney Poitier. Unfortunately there was no time for questions but there were some very interesting insights shared by them.
