Chain Gang

We spent the night in Chesterfield seeing our son and his family. We took 2 year old Eric to the park as his mum had an important appointment, and on the way we passed this bit of industrial archeology.

The gateway is clearly decorative but celebrates the past, and actually incorporates it.  The chains mentioned on the plaque are part of the gateway, and the hole below it is where the chains went.

But why trains were going from the brewery to the gasworks is an answer I don't have.

And who was in the Chain Gang?

I do know where the gas works was because about 200 yards away is the site where two gasomters have been demolished recently.
