Bohemian waxwings and others
Today the waxwings came to call. One or two deign to join the other birds on the ground now and again but today a small flock came calling. Definitely time to get the real camera out and make use of that zoom option to grab a few pictures. The main blip is the clearest picture of a waxwing, Apparently the amount of red and yellow on the wing tips increases as the birds get older so this one is fairly young. In one of the extras I've caught a more mature bird with a fine display of red and yellow.
The English name "waxwing" comes from the red colour, which reminded some early twitcher of sealing wax. The scientific name is Bombycilla garrulus, and that first word, a mixture of Greek and Latin, means "silky tail", which is exactly what they are called in Swedish "silk tail", Sidensvans.
The third picture shows that sometimes, especially around food, birds of different varieties can still flock together - a Bohemian waxwing, European greenfinch, and Eurasian tree sparrow.
This is a backblip from yesterday. Today's sunrise blip is also in place.
