Mountain trail
There are of course many trails on Öland, initiated and kept by the country board in each region. It's a long time since our local group of friends went for a walk along one of these trails. Today someone suggested the Mountain-trail, an industrial trail along the limestone ovens and the Alum shale quarries on the southwest tip of my island.
From where we started the drive, the weather was amazing but the further we got, the banks of mist were rolling in and we started in chill and dampness. Alum is used in the tanning, textile, paper, and medical industries and started, here on Öland in 1723 and were at its largest around 1820. In the 1890's it was all over, though limestone was still quarried and refined here here until 2020.
Walking the trail means visiting the quarries, the lodges, some machinery and a lot of slag-heaps from the refining of the Alum, hence the "mountains", see the extra. The main is a wall of Alum-shale, a beautiful colour, which the foto can't really catch. Very beautiful. The mist lifted when the sun rose and we had a fantastic walk of about nine km.
