Marjorie's ramblings

A very exciting birthday

We reluctantly said goodbye to our lovely hotel and drove to the small airport that used to be the main airport for Windhoek.

Everyone was delighted to help me celebrate my birthday and I sat up front with the pilot of our 10 seater Cessna for our 2.5 hour flight to Purros.

Looking at the landscape from above was breathtaking and I now want to read about the Geology of this land. Dry river beds and their tributaries look like tree branches. There is one of a plateau region in the extras.

Our pilot, Wayne, landed safely on a tiny landing strip and we were welcomed by staff from the Okahirongo Elephant Lodge. We sat in a tiny wooded hut and drank champagne!

The lodge consists of a group of grey hut like buildings. The architect was inspired. Our rooms are large and with spectacular views.

Animals were in short supply on our first drive. It was very hot. I have included a giraffe eating what look like dry branches. We saw ostrich but no elephants. There are no water holes in this area.

Recent rains mean that we cannot drive downstream where the elephants are. Too muddy for the vehicle, which cut out repeatedly on out night time drive!

The food here is excellent and I ate lamb for my evening meal!

We arrived at our sunset spot with only a few minutes before sunset. We had been distracted by elephant bones en route.

What an amazing birthday!
