Scrabo Tower
Today I decided to escape the village and take my walk climbing the steep path to Scrabo Tower, built in memory of the 3rd Marguess of Londonderry. It is a well known landmark for miles around.
Many years ago when I was visiting Sterling University I met a German gentleman and when we got talking he asked where I was from. I told him that he probably never heard of the place, but I mentioned Newtownards and he immediately said Scrabo Tower! I was amazed and ask how he knew of the tower and he said that the Luftwaffe used it to navigate to Belfast on bomb runs. Must admit that I had never heard that before.
