A is for...Algebra, Acanthus and August
When I thought of doing the Alphabet Challenge prompted by CharlotteJ, I remembered I had seen this mind-bending maths formula on building site hoardings outside what used to be The Crescent Lodge Hotel in Boscombe, so Algebra seemed a good idea to start the challenge.
Maths has never been my strong point and although I can do simple stuff, Algebra was just "off the wall" as far as I was concerned - so this hoarding means nothing to me. When it first appeared, it was thought to be a complicated mathematical equation, but apparently that is not the case; it is meaningless, according to a famous mathematician - and to me!
Whilst looking at the hoarding from different angles, two teenagers came along and asked if I knew the answer - they obviously didn't know about my 'Fail' in my Maths GCE! They asked why I was taking a photograph, so I told them about blip and the Alphabet Challenge, so they soon cottoned on to the fact that A was for Algebra. We had a chat about the equation and I did invite them to be in the photograph, but they declined and said they didn't want to be famous!
Then as I moved around the park area just in front, I realised that there were some flowers that also began with the letter A - Acanthus, more commonly known as Bear's Breeches. I have always admired them, but never planted them in our garden, as they have long, spiny points - not a good idea when children are playing!
And then of course, we are in the month of August - so you have 3 for the price of 1 today!
My blip on 7th April 2013 What's In a Name? has also prompted me to include a name given to Jesus in the Bible, using the letters of the alphabet.
'I am the ALPHA and the Omega,' says the Lord God,
'who is, and who was, and who is to come,
the ALMIGHTY.
