Alice Carey

Bright ridges of bees round the full hive were humming,
Away in the thick woods the partridge was drumming;
The rush of the sickle, the scythe-stroke serener,
Were pleasantly mixed with the song of the gleaner,
When under the shadows of full-blowing roses.
