Smith’s Alternative
When I first lived in Canberra (early 90s, if you discount my year as a toddler in 67 when my Dad retrained as a programmer, and three months in 84 when I started an abortive degree in prehistory), Smiths was a pretty awesome alternative bookshop. Fast forward a few decades and it’s now a pretty awesome (if grungy) alternative music venue. Despite the name, there’s no books, but there are a few street pianos outside. Someone was playing one of the functional ones while I took this portrait of one that looks straight out of my prehistory.
