Our shameful Royal past

We went to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in Exeter today with the Kingskerswell Natural History Society. Wonderful place . Although I loved this magnificent tiger I didn’t like the story behind it. It was shot in Nepal by King George V in 1911 and presented to the Museum in 1915. The notes say the King went tiger hunting on the back of an elephant. He waited for tigers to be driven towards him by the uproar caused by a crowd of beaters. In 1911 the king shot 39 tigers including this one.
He then presented them to Museums all round the country so that people who couldn’t get to India could meet a tiger face to face. I apologised to the tiger on behalf of the stupid man. The record of the hunt makes horrific and shameful reading.

It was a good day out, in good company, and to top it all we had time to visit the city library.
