The Pensioner

Chained

Over to the yard to get that anchor shackled and moused up. And a blether with Dawson, working away in the workshop making a box for the electrical guddle. And MrL - we discuss the Burns supper - can you imagine, at the age of 72 he’s never attended one. Never!
His wife is doing the reply to the toast to the lassies. There’s a hard gig - doing the toast to the lassies that is, if you know she’s replying. She takes no prisoners. And later he tells me, by email, that he actually plays the flute! Why he’s not been drafted into our band I have no idea.
Later, The Nickel Boys up at Everyman. A quite exceptional piece of filmmaking but my enjoyment of it was probably slightly compromised by having read the book. It was very light on some aspects of that - so much so that I wondered how understandable the story would have been to someone who’d never read it. I needn’t have worried; she was sitting beside me and adored it.
