Aveiro
We took the train out to Aveiro today, known as the ‘Venice of Portugal’. It was nice to experience somewhere with such a different vibe to Porto. We wondered the town and the canals and enjoyed a beer in the sunshine. Throughout the day it slowly dawned on us that we had arrived on a day where festivities were beginning, the first day of a five day festival. We stuck around into the evening to see the start of the festival, where bread is thrown of the top of a church to the waiting crowds, to signify a priest who use to throw bread down to people suffering with leprosy. Over the years, the bread has developed into some kind of sweet, tough, rugby ball type article and it was more of a danger activity than we had anticipated.
