Loch Shiel
Looking up (N) Loch Shiel to the Glenfinnan hills. Though fresh water this loch level was at 5m OD on the day. I perceived this as high as many lochside fences were still submerged.
To reach the sea at high tide the River Shiel therefore drops very little in a couple of miles.
Elsewhere I am aware planning restrictions due to coastal flooding concerns now dictate that FFL (finished floor level) of new builds should be above 5m OD (say at Loch Leven/ Linnhe). By implication that high tide/storm surge combination event could see Loch Shiel becoming partially tidal. What a terrifying prospect.
When you glance at the map, while zoomed out, Loch Shiel could be mistaken for a sea inlet. I can't think of another large body of fresh water that exists so close to sea level.
