End Of The Year In-Car Entertainment
I was up very early today - not through choice - as one member of our household, whom I may have mentioned before, has an incessant cough which they steadfastly refuse to do anything about and this morning it started at the godforsaken hour of 1 a.m! Of course they eventually got back to sleep but I was resolutely and utterly, despite several attempts to be otherwise, awake.
So by half past one I was downstairs wide-eyed, but definitely not bushy tailed, which for some reason I then chose to exacerbate by having a strong coffee. So as I was not going to be returning to the land of nod any time soon I decided to watch one of my favourite guilty pleasures (nobody else in the household watches it) "The Split" written by Abi Morgan and starring the always wonderful Nicola Walker. I was bereft when this ended after two series and was delighted when I found out it was back for two episodes over the festive period - this time set in Barcelona no less. So whilst I was initially aggravated to be up at that ungodly hour it turned out to be a real treat to watch this on my own with no interruptions or familial disapproval.
I did eventually get back to sleep after my nocturnal viewing of high class soap but I did feel a little heavy lidded when I got up for a second time at 7 a.m and was definitely heavy legged on my morning run.
Later it was a quick trip to the supermarket to get the ingredients for my 'legendary' (only in my own mind) New Year slow roast pork shoulder, which may have also included a pint based interlude at The Pippin, before we headed back home for a lunch of crackers and cheese and homemade soup followed by some pretty eclectic TV viewing - Traffic Cops on Channel 5 and two documentaries - one on Sir Alex Ferguson on the BBC iPlayer and another on Now called Becoming Madonna about the formative years of the singer's career.
Our favourite programme of the day though had to be My National Gallery on ITVX where employees and visitors (including some celebrities) to the gallery got to chose their favourite painting and give their reasons why they opted for that particular artwork. Glorious art and fascinating stories!
Today's 'experimental' image was taken through my car window towards some festive lights on the other side of the road with illumination provided by unlocking my car from the key fob so the internal light would come on - my idea of entertainment on New Year's Eve!
Being of Scottish birth I should have really stayed up to watch the Hogmanay celebrations (although having said that the outdoor festivities in Edinburgh were cancelled due to high winds) but with my very early start plus the frankly risible excuse that I've been a sassenach now for far too long, and seem to have lost any particular enthusiasm for New Year, it was time for an early night.
