Happy New Year!
It was a lazy morning that was the afternoon before I got up. Despite the late hour, we both felt good, but neither wanted to head out into the wind and rain to pick up breakfast supplies, so we made do with what was in the house.
Last night, we'd made arrangements that the six of us would go to the cinema to see Daniel Craig in Queer. We could only find it playing at the British Film Institute on the South Bank. So, at 5pm, we met up. There was a noticeable lack of alcoholic drinks being ordered. Everyone agreed that we were glad we'd planned and bought the tickets because, if we hadn't, we might all have found an excuse. The BFI's cinemas are nicely appointed with lots of space. It was very comfortable.
Daniel Craig's portrayal of a 1950s gay man grappling with loneliness and addiction is really good—different from Bond—but the ending confuses. PY found an explanation.
Afterwards, I took a picture of the old cinema projection camera on display. It's an aim to try and see more films in 2025. Last year, we only saw four movies in a cinema, which was a few more than in recent years but nowhere near what we used to do. Last year, it was Poor Things (weird, horrific, and compelling), Die Hard (yes, I’d never seen it), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (fun, and I preferred it), and Wicked (a really good adaptation).
Then, we said goodbye to P&E, and the four of us ended up at Wagamama's. I'm glad we did because it would have been too late if we'd left eating until we got home. I'd have defaulted to something from the takeaway—which would probably have been worse for me than the saku saku duck soba that I ordered (soba noodles cooked in an amai sauce with crispy shredded duck). The Internet says an amai sauce is a sweetened and thickened soy sauce. It was delicious, and the duck was extremely crispy—it was all perfect for a New Year's meal.
