Via Appia Antica

We went outside of the city walls of Rome today. Or ‘fiori le mura, in Italian.
By metro, bus (complicated but fun) and foot, we found our way to the Via Appia Antica.
We visited museums and the catacombes where thousands of prosecuted Christians have been buried. Very impressive to walk around amongst all those graves, three stories deep.

We stayed much longer in this area than planned, so we had to find our way back into the city during dusk. But once we found it, we soon arrived in the crowdedness of the Centro Storico again.
Dinner was enjoyed and after that we went back to the hotel to prepare for New Year's Eve.

NYE turned out to be quite an event. Thousands of people gathering round the Colosseum and Circus Maximus where a music festival was in full swing. Fireworks everywhere. Bigger and louder than what we're used to.
The crowds!! People were packed on the streets, never seen so much people walking in the same direction. Streets were blocked, but despite that some cars tryed to get passed anyway. What chaos!
We enjoyed the fireworks at midnight and started our walk back to the hotel soon after that because the atmosphere was changing drastically. Drunk people, shouting people, we didn't want to be part of that.

Happy New Year! Buon Anno.
