Lanyard

Well...
I saw a new Lanyard and badge online which I thought would be better for me than the sunflower invisible disabilities lanyard.

I started wearing the sunflower lanyard during Covid & Lockdowns & extensive mask wearing. Because there was no way I could lipread people wearing masks.
So, this new lanyard states specifically my deafness.
I have never worn anything in the past that states I am deaf. I always felt that was a vulnerability issue for me if I did that.

All my life I have hidden my deafness, via strategies, in order to get by in every day life....deafness counted against me in many ways...

So here is the new lanyard.
I also bought a badge to attach. A bit of humour, but perfectly serious in intent.

I have tested it out for two days and it is far more effective than the sunflower lanyard.

I am currently writing and printing some extra info to go on cards on the back of the first card to show if necessary.
The first one might be:
“I’m Deaf, not rude—I’m still figuring out what you said!
Lipreading only works if I can see your lips.”

Daughter in Australia thought maybe the first statement should be "I need time to process what you've just said "

You see when I lipread, I don't see and assimilate your words immediately. I have to work out what the lip reading probably said, and because there is a gap between you saying something and me responding, people think I am being standoffish or rude. (The specialist at the eye hospital did not give me that chance, and my brain was silenced into not being able to work out anything at all. And a card like that might be able to help in that situation).

I am veering towards "I'm Deaf, not rude - I'm still figuring out what you've just said!"

I will also some cochlear information on another card.

So, this is what I will be wearing next week when the Continence Nurse comes to the house....to test it out...
