Orange and Yellow Things in the Garden
Grey skies gave way to a sunny day, which was an opportunity for a little bit of garden work: harvesting some mandarins and picking a few nearby narcissus. And then there is the Buddha’s Hand, a fingered citron (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis). It’s zest is used as an aromatic; there is nothing to eat here, just rind and pith, but my sources say the fruit is displayed in China for good luck, and gifted in Japan as a sign of good fortune. We had our tree in a pot for years, and a couple seasons ago planted it in the ground against the fence, where it is thriving.
