Dish of the Day

I had an appointment in south Manchester this morning, and decided to head from there to Jodrell Bank. It proved to be a circuitous route because extensive flooding (1000 households were evacuated from their homes yesterday) has meant that many roads are closed. Most dramatically perhaps the embankment of the Bridgewater Canal collapsed and breached at Dunham Massey. Not a good start to the year for many folk.

In contrast today has been a beautiful day, clear blue skies. My main purpose in going to Jodrell Bank was to see the astronomy photographer of the year exhibition. Astonishing and fascinating images, way beyond my capabilities. It’s actually the 2023 competition entries, passed on by the Greenwich Royal Observatory which is currently hosting the 2024 commendations, runners up and winners in the various categories.

The image is the Lovell radio telescope, which still has one of the world’s largest dishes.
