Happy New Year. Normally this slot would be an oosh moment of the Hogmanay fireworks in Edinburgh. But all was cancelled and the New Year came in sombre, absent the throngs of people heading to the park to watch the show together.

Now it’s trying to snow on the rain-sodden ground but lucky us in a warm, dry airy flat.
