Red-breasted Mergansers

Pretty dire weather today with wind, rain and snow, but it let up for a short while and I cycled along to Scapa Bay. The usual birds there- including 11 r.b.mergansers, 4 bar-tailed godwits, 8 black guillemots, common guillemots, long-tailed ducks, eider, cormorants, shag etc. A shoal of sprats is probably what was drawing them in, and it was interesting watching the guillemots chase them. The birds would swim below the shoal and try to catch the fish as they burst the surface. Extra of a black guillemot with a catch.
