It Was All Going To Plan...
We've probably all done it - you know the sort of thing, letting the milk for the bread sauce boil over, flooding the hob. Today I excelled. Yes, the Gold Medal of bread sauce disasters.
I forgot the milk heating for infusing the (half) onion and spices. Not merely overboiled, nor boiled it dry, but positively cremated it - smoke filled the kitchen, the pan black with soot, the onion and spices burned to a crisp. So I took the obvious action and put the pan in the sink and ran the tap to cool it.
The strange thing was, the bowl didn't seem to fill, however long the tap ran. Because, of course, I had not put the pan in the stainless steel sink but the plastic washing-up bowl therein and the pan had melted a hole through it, leaving a distorted round shape in its place.
Fortunately I am well-supplied with washing-up bowls (as I use them for storage), and have a matching saucepan to use, so, putting the blackened pan and lid to soak, the process was begun to prepare replacement ingredients, watched carefully for signs of overheating. I have to be thankful that it was not the copper-bottomed pan but the 'all-purpose' base, which will withstand the required scrubbing.
From then on it has been a quiet, enjoyable day; the turkey meal was delicious. Our contribution to the planned family meal was uplifted, along with their presents, by the Younger Flums, who later shared a WhatsApp video of the Flumlet opening his, with which he seemed quite pleased.
We have watched the Railway Children Return, Downton Abbey and are awaiting Call the Midwife, then, maybe, will partake of a light supper and, for myself, head for an early night.
Happy Christmas, everyone!
