Woolly bear caterpillar

The woolly bear caterpillar - with its 13 distinct segments of black and reddish-brown, is not really pretty little caterpillar. It is a munching machine, working his way through our garden!

Woolly bears do not actually feel much like wool-they are covered with short, stiff bristles of hair.

In time they form a cocoon, pupate and emerge as the Isabella Tiger Moth.

Hairier!
