All is not well in the federal government
Up early to take Mrs. Ottawacker to work. I wasn’t sure what was happening at first, then realised that I had been sleeping. I don’t feel well, but I feel a lot better than yesterday. Drove her in quickly, came home, chivvied Ottawacker Jr. through his morning routines, then drove him to school, as I had a few errands to run. Contemplated Ichiban, but the disappointment of them not having baguettes or croissants might have been too much for me to bear, so I didn’t. Instead, quick run to Farm Boy, where I bought a duck (as you do), and then to Loblaws. Neither of these places had any vegetables I wanted. Apples, yes – plenty of apples… but not the vegetables. God, I miss Portugal. Most egregious, the asparagus was $8.99 for a bunch of about six. It’s been high all year, but this goes beyond the pale. Most pleasing was the complete absence of people in the shops. 9am is the time to go.
Spent much of the day running around doing various errands and discovering that while things might be at a crucial (or critical) juncture for me, they weren’t for other people. The postal workers were mandated back to work, and so they will be able to work over Christmas – however, there will be no mail collections until the end of this week and no house-to-house mail deliveries or letters until after Christmas. I’m really not sure why they agreed to go back to work: I’d have refused, I think. There is still a lot of support for the postal workers as they are seen as being pawns in the game. Quite frankly, Canada Post is run by a bunch of charlatans who have forgotten that it is, after all, a postal service.
Big news of the day was the resignation of Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s finance minister, and Deputy Prime Minister. She is very good – and gets on Trump’s tits because she is (a) very good, (b) a woman, and (c) of Ukrainian descent. For those reasons, I’d make her Prime Minister immediately. But it isn’t up to me. Apparently, she has gone because she disagrees about some of the “costly political gimmicks” that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government has been using in its efforts to win re-election next year (i.e., the GST tax holiday). Mostly agree and if it helps get rid of Justin Trudeau and contributes to keeping the obsequious Poilièvre out of office, then “let’s go baby”. But I am not sure it will. JT will most likely hang on in the firm belief he can beat the toad, and if he goes, it will throw the party into a whirlwind of chaos, on which the Tories will capitalise. As much as the United States, Canada needs a political reshuffle. The Liberals came to power promising proportional representation: they didn’t do it. Now they will be ousted. It's a big frigging mess.
Ottawacker Jr. had soccer in the evening. The weather is beginning to get very chilly.
