A rose in December
I woke up this morning stuffed up and realised I am getting a cold. Fortunately I do not have much on today. I phoned the dentist as I had lost the corner of a filling underneath a crown. I was amazed that he asked me to come in later in the morning and he fixed it. I had no idea what to blip and then remembered that there are still a couple of roses on the rose bush. They have done well this year. I watched President Macron on the news during his visit to Mayotte. He was standing in the middle of a baying crowd unhappy with the response of the French government. He was arguing forcibly that the French government is doing all it can given the very difficult circumstances and that the island is lucky to be a French department rather than on its own. Some would say that the island has been neglected over the years. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the argument, I thought it praiseworthy that he was prepared to stand in the middle of the crowd, strongly defending the French state and interacting with individuals in a very human way, not without some risk to his personal safety. I don't expect that of politicians these days.
