The Broken Road

We meet in a seafront hotel for our book group, and this is the distracting view from our table, looking across to Torquay . We were discussing the Broken Road by Patrick Leigh Fermor. I have wanted to read this book and the others in the trilogy since a friend mentioned it in a letter. It is an amazing travel book, a story of a very long walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople, when the author was 18. It is wordy and quite dense and difficult to read in places. As my friend said, ‘ Don’t expect Laurie Lee.’ Robert Macfarlane said it was a classic of what might be called the literature of the leg.
Patrick L F lived in Greece so he may have liked the view. Not an easy read but a hit with most of us.
The little beach at the back is still out of bounds in case of rock falls but do the dog walkers take any notice of the barriers or large signs? Not a hope in hell. Five dogs on there this morning.
