Eat with care

I found a tree with this fruit growing on it but hesitated picking and eating it. It looks very much to me like a mirabelle plum but I could be wrong. It is a shame I cannot make a positive identification as there is plenty of fruit ready to gather. If I picked and stewed a few that might help decide just from the smell.
