West Walls Carlisle. Starting in 1122 at this recess locals paid tithes to the powers that be. Tithes means tenth in old English. People had to give up a tenth of their profit or produce on an annual basis. Tithes therefore were medieval taxes. Our taxation today hits us at a much higher percentage. Progress ?
