Newport Cathedral
I had a few things to do in Newport City (South Wales, UK) so left home late morning when it was foggy but clear in Newport.
A visit to a good friend and former colleage saw me enjoying a coffee and being gifted a 12 year old bottle of Jonny Walker (Black) and a book on Herefordshire, the reason given was for getting to State Pension Age in September! Most kind, and oddly enough I had a book for him on British Battle sites - one of his degrees is History!
On the way home I stopped at St Wools Cathedral which overlooks Newport City. There was a wattle and daub church on the site since 500AD which was rebuilt a few times and the present site of St Mary's Chapel (1066AD) which has Saxon origins. The first extra shows the Norman arch of St Mary's chapel (with Roman columns from the Roman Legionary base at Caerleon) which is belived to have been used in the grave of 5th century Lord of Gwynllwg (St Woolos)! The last extra is the Norman Chapel and 12th century arches looking up the aisle to the newer built 1960's chancel which houses the Christmas Tree.
