Desert Bowls

TUESDAY

The day started with Rob the Roofer arriving first thing to finish off his work - all done now in time for Christmas.

Late morning, I headed over to Rhyl to meet Paul and Gareth for a game of bowls at East Parade. The bowling green by the seafront was more beach than green, thanks to last weekend’s Storm Darragh. The winds had blown so much sand from the beach that half of Rhyl had been covered and the bowling green didn’t escape. In places it was like a desert and the bowls whipped up the sand in their wake.

I’ve played floodlit bowls in autumn back in West Yorkshire, but only once before have I played outdoors in December. It was a balmy 10ºC, but we wore gloves at times to keep warm.  Gareth, as always, was in shorts. You wouldn’t think we were in the middle of winter.

This evening I went to The Castle Inn in Rhuddlan for a quiz night that the bowling club was hosting. The proceeds were split between the club and St. Kentigen’s Hospice, so it was good to support a good cause. It was a lot of fun, and it was great to catch up with my "summer friends" from the club in the run up to Christmas.

.The end pictured was not one of the best - we normally bowl much closer to the jack. Oh, and for once I won the game 21- 18 - 13.
