The cave

I think I mentioned Royston cave when I first moved here. Well it’s taken me until today to finally visit. It’s hard to describe but it’s a small hexagonal room with carvings covering the walls. The original entrance must have been tricky to get in as it finishes about 20 ft above ground level. The guide was very knowledgeable about its history, although , in short, it seems that there are a number of theories. It’s sited where the Icknield Way and Ermine Street meet and it’s thought maybe it’s linked to Knights Templars from Baldock, or it maybe a Hermitage. It was however filled in and capped off and rediscovered by workmen in 1742.
The carvings go all round  the cave and are mostly Christian. My blip is thought to be St Katherine holding the spiked wheel with which  she’s associated . My extra  is looking up to the grate that is in the pavement on Melbourn St. I think hundred of people must walk over it every day without realising what lies below.
