Laurel Forest
Backblip
La Palma is a verdant island. Its height and position means it catches moisture off the trade winds blowing westwards. Bananas are the big crop at low levels, there are extensive canarian pine forests, and in the dampest places there are laurel forests. In the image (distorted, I am playing around with an ultra wide setting on my phone) we are walking through a ravine in a laurel forest. Laurels are adapted to damp places, whereas the canarian pines are adapted to a volcanic environment. Uniquely amongst pines they have a thick bark under which buds form, so that if consumed by fire they can regenerate. Their cones can also stay closed for a long time but will open readily if subject to fire.
