Fungi - King Alfred's Cakes

Named after the King's poor baking skills!

It's not edible but apparently makes great firelighters and can be used as charcoal briquettes for barbecuing. In the past it was used to transport fire as it smoulders for a long while. Also makes a good handwarmer on a cold day! Needless to say I didn't try any of those things.
