Out of focus
Despite getting some nice portraits this week, I was not super enthusiastic about taking a photo of Julia this evening. (That sounds kind of bad now that I'm reading back over it!) She suggested some city bokeh, proving that she's the awesomest person ever because she apparently listens to me when I go on and on (and on) about photography.
After two weeks away, I went back to Phillippa's this morning for what I think is going to be the last time. All the issues from a few weeks ago are still fresh in my mind, and I was really miserable about having to be there this morning. Given that I only have one shift a week there, I feel like I won't be losing much by quitting, and it's not worth the stress and unhappiness this job is bringing me right now.
The good news is, I have an interview on Tuesday at a cafe nearby so (fingers crossed!) I won't actually be unemployed if I quit Phillippa's. I'm going to quit anyway, but it would be nice to have a job to go to once I've left.
Julia and I had tickets to see Stoker at the film festival this evening, so we met early for dinner (dumplings in Chinatown, yum) and then headed up to the cinema. We were really early so we got a drink (with my discount) and then the guy who was in charge last night spotted us and came over to say hello. He said we could line up in the members queue instead of the normal one (woo!), which turned out to be really awesome because the film before ours ran very very late.
Anyway, the perks of volunteering aside, the film was incredible. I was worried it would be super creepy, and it was creepy but in a beautiful, crazy way. It was so absorbing and compelling and visually stunning; the acting was incredible, with three Aussie ladies in main roles, and I loved the way it quietly subverted a lot of genre stereotypes. Such a great film. Everyone go and see it!
I took this on our way up to the cinema - I think we were either on Bourke or Russell St - and although I took others that were clearer, where you can see the street-scape, this one is my favourite. It's just light. Light and softly focussed shapes. It's very soothing in its abstraction.
