Soccer Saturday throws up an unexpected benefit

Still a little discomfited from yesterday’s funeral, but I slept reasonably well and got up to take Ottawacker Jr. to his U14 call up. He hasn’t played since we got back from Portugal – indeed, he has only had one training session – so I was more than a little curious to see how he would do. I didn’t have to wait long to find out – he did rather well.

The team won 5-2 against Ottawa City U14s – and he made some decent saves. He might have done better for both goals – he raced out to the edge of his box for the first one, realized he couldn’t get to the ball, and pulled out of the challenge. The striker (who happened to be my friend Amr’s son, Mazen) headed the ball rather cutely into the net. For the second one, he was unsighted and the ball floated into the net.

Home, had lunch, Elissa offered to take Ottawacker Jr. to practice – and then after we had dropped him off, he got invited to sleep over – so, all of a sudden, we had a free night. And how did we spend the free night? I ordered a Chinese, we sat in our chairs, and slept – while pretending to watch a TV comedy about cricket and failing relationships starring Brenda Blethyn and Timothy Spall. Do we ever know how to live or what?
