3/30 Ridge and Furrow
"Ridge and furrow is a feature of how the land was worked in the Middle Ages. Large common fields were worked in narrow strips of land in different ownerships, usually of a furlong (furrow-long, 220 yards) in length. Ploughs at that time were pulled by teams of up to eight oxen."
I have been starting all my blips over the last two months with a quote but today it is just a short explanation about the photo. I realise that if you live in the UK then you probably knew this already but I wondered if those blippers who live further afield might be interested in it.
This particular field is at Whitchurch, Warwickshire, just down the lane from where I live. I find it fascinating that this method of agriculture was being used over seven hundred years ago, yet as the field hasn't been ploughed over since then it remains as it was.
Continuing on with the history lesson it's worth mentioning that Whitchurch village was wiped out when the Black Death arrived. A farm, a church, and a couple of houses are all that remain.
