Flaky
Gum trees puzzled the early colonial settlers of Australia in many ways, especially their habit of shedding bark rather than leaves. In some species the old flaking bark is brightly coloured, in other the freshly-exposed new bark is attractive. Bark-shedding usually occurs in early summer, and is happening now in bushland close to home in Brisbane, where I photographed this gum tree today.
