Snake in the grass

I went out for an early walk because it was minus 2 degrees and frosty.  I saw this piece of drift wood washed up beside the river and immediately it reminded me of a snake slithering about in the grass.  Unlikely to be one that big in this temperature though.  
The photo that got away was a heron sitting beside the river looking for breakfast.
