Tewit Well, Harrogate

This domed 'temple' is positioned over the first natural mineral spring discovered in Harrogate in 1571. The Chalybeate (apparently pronounced Ka-lee-bee-at) spring's iron-rich reddish water was believed to have health-giving properties and launched the town as a world famous spa. Many other wells were discovered, containing a wide range of minerals.

The dome was originally used as the cover for a sulphur water well in the centre of the town. It was built in 1807-8, to designs by Thomas Chippindale. The dome was moved to its present position, on the Stray in 1842
