Wayside Cross & geocaching
Was joining my friends, Margaret and Ian to do an adventure lab and a few other caches in Southport but we met up here on the way to grab a geocache at this place first
The wayside cross is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. it was erected in medieval times as part of two lines of crosses which led from historic Scarisbrick Park; one line led to Ormskirk (a market town since 1286) and the other to Burscough Priory which was founded about 1190 by the Augustinians.
The cross would have been a wayside shrine and a route marker across the then treacherous marshy ground. Funerals may have paused here on the way to burial.
After finding the geocache near this cross we headed off to Hesketh Park in Southport which is a lovely park. We found all the caches and answered all the lab cache questions correctly.
A good trip.
