Sweet Potato

Soup.  It was delicious, particularly with the addition of the chilli chips from a chilli farm not many miles away.

But sweet potato has particular connotations for me: my father had to suffer the vegetable when he and my mother moved to a place called Mukalla on the Arabian coast, east of Aden (Yemen).  There were not many ex pats living there (22, I seem to remember) and potatoes were not available; my father liked plain food, and "yams" were not part of his normal diet.  It was also difficult to source baked beans and tomato sauce, so we had to stock up when the RAF flew their Beverley transports to the nearby RAF airfield (RAF Riyan), and even then there was competition for food back home.

My pet hate, when I was home from boarding school, was the weevils which inhabited the packets of cereals when they had been stored for a certain amount of time . . .
