The Supreme Court
This is a photo of the statue of Millicent Garrett Fawcett looking on to the Westminster Parliament. Garrett Fawcett was one of the many, many women who fought for women to be allowed to vote. Over a hundred years on from (some) women being given the franchise, the Commons still has a low number of women MPs; low compared to the percentage of women who live in the UK.
I was in the Supreme Court today to hear the case of For Women Scotland vs the Scottish Government on the question of what is a woman (see the extra). I’m not particularly interested in getting into a debate here, other than to say the Scottish Government’s position is that we are following the law as it is currently written.
It feels to me that the question we should be asking is what is a man. I certainly fear toxic masculinity more than any trans women. Most of the men I know are loving and gentlemanly, but the fact remains that most of the crime committed is by men. I see a lot of men not sure of their place in the world and that’s a vulnerability that toxic masculinity exploits.
Just my thoughts.
