M&GN Bridge at Lenwade

The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway was the longest single track mainline in the country before the railway grouping of 1923.

It connected the Midlands with Norfolk, connecting through its hub at Melton Constable (the "Crewe of Norfolk") with three lines to Cromer and Sheringham, Great Yarmouth and Norwich.

This bridge is on the Norwich Branch leading to the long closed Norwich City station, and is at Lenwade over the River Wensum, which was the M&GN's valley route from Melton to Norfolk's capital.

It was built by the Lynn and Fakenham Railway Company in 1882 and taken over by the M&GN on its formation in 1893. It closed to passengers with most of the rest of this unique network in 1959, but stayed open to goods from the Lenwade concrete factory in 1983.
