Fairy Ring
Here is a Fairy Ring of toadstools in a garden in Arnside. It is one of the best I have seen.
You may be interested in how such an impressive ring is formed.
Imagine in the beginning just a small group of toadstools grow close together. In the first year their underground filaments search for and use up the nutrients in the ground between them. In the next year the spores give rise to new toadstools but the filaments all move outwards search for new nutrients. As this process continues the toadstools gradually move away from each other. As you can imagine it takes very many years for the result to look like this. And it depends on the area remaining undisturbed for a long time. In this case the owners of the house believe in fairies and are very proud of this remarkable natural feature.
On another topic I wish to apologise for trying yesterday to make humour of the naming of Storm Bert. It was very inappropriate.
Although the storm was mild here it is now clear from what I read, that elsewhere and particularly in north and south Wales, it was devastating inits effects. A number of people were killed and the very serious flooding has been dreadful for several areas.
