1 and 1/4 pounder, boiled
We enjoyed some lobsters at Helen's the local restaurant, after a day of driving in the awful weather. It rained cats and dogs all day as we went on a little jaunt south to Jonesport. A few years ago we saw a local TV show when we were here about a husband and wife team who had constructed a model railroad in their garage. Sadly, the husband died last year, but Helen, his wife still opens up to showcase the trains. It was wonderful, filled with whimsical and realistic detail everywhere. Helen was a peach, sadly missing her husband, Buz, but proud to show their handiwork. Her nephew arrived and gave us a real show, starting up a cool steam locomotive complete with smoke and explaining the way everything operates with computerized upgrades from their original system.
We planned on lobster rolls for lunch at a recommended take out spot on Beal's Island across the bridge from Jonesport. That was not to be...the rain was coming down in sheets by then and waiting at a take-out window just wouldn't have worked. We drove on to Cherryfield to check out a cool general store we had read about, only to find it out of business. I did see a building at the nearby intersection that jogged my childhood memories. We always stopped there on our way up here for vacation.
Helen's Restaurant saved our hunger pains with lobster and a shared piece of one of their pies, chocolate/coconut cream to finish the meal.
We're home now, it's quite cold and we're in our cozy sweats ready for a night of reading. Tomorrow is the big 250th Anniversary celebration for Machiasport. Hopefully the sun will shine.
