“We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.”
Martin Luther King Jr.
A bit warmer this morning, and after a leisurely breakfast with E I headed off on the journey home. Soon realised it wasn’t going to be as straightforward as I thought. I’d seen the steady rain yesterday but hadn’t been out, so hadn’t appreciated the impact the storm had locally. Road to Ledbury was flooded in places but passable, so on I forged. As I approached Much Marcle other drivers were flashing me, so I was prepared as the road ahead disappeared under deeper water as far ahead as I could see. The car in front did a three pointer and headed back. I paused, running through the road ahead in my mind. The ground would be falling so it seemed too risky to go on, and I headed back, turning off towards Newent where I knew I could join the M50 which would probably be clear. Passed through several floods where I could see they weren’t too deep, even paused at one to let other cars with higher chassis through before attempting it myself. A few nerve racking moments and several more floods before I reached the M50 at Gorsley. Even after Monmouth I couldn’t be sure I’d get back, the other carriageway was under deep water into Monmouth with long tailbacks. When I did finally get back even the Afon Lwyd had flooded into the boating lake and surrounding fields – time to settle down and wrap up warm after my little adventure.
