Refracted Sunlight
I walked down the steep road to the lake at the bottom of the hill. We don't do this walk so often precisely because we always have to finish the walk with a plod back up the steep hill!
Anyway, I'd seen the lake was frozen and the snow had blown around leaving a pattern of clear ice and snow-covered ice, and I thought it might make an interesting picture.
It was a delightful day because the sky was almost clear and there was no wind. It was chilly and though the sun was devoid of warmth it was still lovely to see.
I took a few pictures as the sun was setting but this photo came shortly after the sun disappeared behind that hill. As I say, the sun had gone down but it left a beam of light rising to a brightness in the sky - almost a false sun. Getting a reflection on a patch of clear ice was a bonus.
This phenomena is caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere refracting the sunlight, but beyond that basic explanation you'll have to do your own research, because I'm off to watch "Strictly"!
